Who Qualifies for Mounjaro in Ireland?

One of the first questions we often get is “who qualifies for Mounjaro in Ireland?” Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medication licensed for use in Ireland. Because it is a powerful medication, its prescription is governed by strict clinical guidelines to ensure it is used safely and for the correct patient group.

Eligibility is not a self-assessment – it must be determined by an IMC-registered doctor.

The main clinical criteria

A doctor will assess your health, but the general guidelines state that Mounjaro is licensed for adults for weight management who meet one of the following criteria:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or more (the clinical definition of obesity).
  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 kg/m² or more (defined as overweight) in the presence of at least one specific weight-related health condition.

What is a “weight-related condition”?

This is a key part of the criteria. If your BMI is between 27 and 30, your doctor will check if you also have a related medical issue, such as:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol (dyslipidaemia)
  • Pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

Who should not take Mounjaro? (contraindications)

Just as important as who qualifies, is who cannot safely take this medication. A core part of your doctor's assessment is screening for these contraindications. For a comprehensive guide to contraindications, see our detailed post on who can't take Mounjaro.

You should not take Mounjaro if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
  • Have a history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Have a history of pancreatitis.
  • Have a known severe allergy to tirzepatide.
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Your doctor makes the final assessment

Qualification must be confirmed by an IMC-registered doctor. As part of a specialist, doctor-led service, your clinician will typically:

  • Review your full medical history and current diagnoses.
  • Check your current medications and any previous reactions.
  • Confirm your BMI and any weight-related conditions (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea).
  • Decide whether Mounjaro is safe and appropriate for your specific situation.
