Mounjaro injections for weight loss in Ireland

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine used for weight loss in adults who are overweight or have obesity, and to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. In order to maximise benefits, Mounjaro should be used alongside a plan for diet and exercise. Generally, treatment can be suitable for patients with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above if you have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure.

Patient Information: Mounjaro

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine (active ingredient: tirzepatide). It is prescribed for adults to treat type 2 diabetes and to help with weight management and weight control.

This medicine is designed to work alongside lifestyle modifications. To achieve the best results, it should be part of a plan that includes a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity. In a major clinical trial, participants with obesity or who were overweight experienced an average weight reduction of up to 20.9% over 72 weeks.

It is intended to be used as part of a broader management plan that includes diet and exercise. Your GP or specialist will have prescribed this to you based on your specific health needs. At Bua, our partner clinicians work with patients to create bespoke plans which encompass lifestyle adjustments, and where suitable, medication treatment.

Key Information

  • Active Ingredient: Tirzepatide
  • Administration: Once-weekly injection you can do yourself.
  • Primary Uses: Used for treating type 2 diabetes and for weight management.
  • Availability: Mounjaro (tirzepatide) comes in a multi-dose vial.

Eligibility criteria for Mounjaro in Ireland

BMI Thresholds for Eligibility

Eligibility is primarily determined by your Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure of your weight relative to your height:

BMI of 30kg/m² or higher: You are generally eligible for treatment based on your weight alone.

BMI of 27kg/m² to 29.9kg/m²: You can't usually access the medication based on weight alone in this range. You'll need to have at least one weight-related health condition, such as:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease

A doctor will check your health profile to ensure there are no medical reasons that prevent you from taking it. For example, generally, you won't be suitable for Mounjaro if you have:

  • Specific Family History: A history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Pancreatic or Digestive Issues: A history of severe pancreatitis or severe gastroparesis (where the stomach empties too slowly).
  • Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Conflicting Medications: If you are already taking other GLP-1 medications or certain diabetes treatments.

Projected
Continued

This projection is based on the average results from large-scale clinical trials and is for informational purposes only.

Clinical trials have observed the following changes for some patients:

  • Up to 22.5% average weight loss: In a major 72-week study, people taking Mounjaro lost an average of up to 22.5% of their body weight.
  • Dual-action appetite control: Mounjaro is the first medicine to act on two separate hormone receptors (GIP and GLP-1) to help regulate appetite and reduce food intake.
  • Improved metabolic health: Clinical trials have shown significant improvements in blood sugar levels and other cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Sustained weight management: Supports long-term weight loss maintenance when used as part of a managed plan with diet and exercise.

Note: Individual results vary. These outcomes are based on clinical trial data and should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

How to Administer Mounjaro

Before you use Mounjaro for the first time, your healthcare provider should show you how to inject it. Always read the full "Instructions for Use" leaflet provided with your medicine.

  1. Prepare: Inspect the vial. Do not use it if it is damaged, or if the medicine looks cloudy or has particles in it.
  2. Choose Your Injection Site: You can inject into the skin of your stomach (abdomen), your thigh, or your upper arm.
  3. Rotate Your Site: You must change (rotate) your injection site each week. This helps reduce the risk of skin problems.
  4. Inject: Follow the steps in the "Instructions for Use" to prepare and inject your dose.
  5. Dispose: Dispose of your used syringe and needle safely in a sharps container. Never share or reuse your needles or syringes.

Important Note: Every time you inject, select a new location that is at least a finger's width apart from the previous site. Rotating your injection sites is crucial for preventing the development of persistent, hard lumps (fatty nodules), which can form and reduce how well your medication works.

The Potential Side Effects of Mounjaro

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. It's important to be aware of what to look for.

Very Common Side Effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people): Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. These are often not severe and tend to decrease over time. Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is very common when Mounjaro is used with other diabetes medicines that contain a sulphonylurea or insulin. Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of your other medicines to reduce this risk. Signs of low blood sugar include headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, feeling hungry, confusion, irritability, fast heartbeat, and sweating.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention

  • Pancreatitis: Symptoms include severe pain in the stomach and back that does not go away.
  • Severe Allergic Reaction (Rare): Symptoms can include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, with difficulty breathing or swallowing.
